CHARACTERS
KIM (f, could be converted to m). Co-ordinator of the Witt’s End festival. A canny and well-intentioned organiser, she is frustrated by Emily’s chaotic approach, but attracted by her spirited attitude to life.
EMILY (f). Wallace’s wife. Inheritor and occupant of the crumbling mansion. Enthusiastic patron of the festival. Open-hearted, scatterbrained, mystically attached to her ancient heritage.
GLADYS (f). Resident of the nearby Trafalgar housing estate. Bouncy, mischievous and determined to secure improvements for the estate.
WALLACE (m). Emily’s husband. A self-made local businessman and would-be politician. Now co-owner of the mansion and grounds but horrified by the festival. Enjoys intriguing, especially at his wife’s expense. Scathing about her pedigree but determined to capitalise on it by turning Witt’s End into a top-of-the-market tourist resort.
PETER (m). Nerdy technophile with wacky but inspired fantasies.
MARIA (f) [or MARIO, m]. Café proprietor who dreams of greater things, and protector of Peter.
BRIAN (m, could be convertible to f.) A well-meaning volunteer helping in the festival.
LES (m, could be convertible to f). A nasty piece of work, available for hire.
JOHN (m). Local MP. Suave, ambitious and evasive.
