This pantomime has been written for 16 characters but is customisable for different size groups. However, it has the novel feature that one part can be played by somebody with a physical disability who cannot “tread the boards” but stays in their storyteller’s booth at the side of the stage.

The storyteller opens the pantomime by re-telling, just for Jenna, the fairytale of “The Princess and the Pea”. Jenna is singularly unimpressed at the thought that any prince would want to marry a pathetic girl who could notice a pea hidden under a mattress, especially when Jenna is secretly in love with that prince herself. So, the storyteller tells a different version of the fairytale, one that ends with Jenna marrying the prince of her dreams – or does she? That is for each member of the audience to decide for themselves.

This family pantomime is ideal for amateur groups to perform. All the expected pantomime elements are there: a villain to boo; a handsome prince; a beautiful princess; a dame (who disguises herself as a fairy); audience participation including the community song; sword fights; a monster for the “It’s behind you!”; and a happy ending, maybe.
