Chiara: 30s-40s, pretty, quiet reserve except when she can’t hold it in anymore, observing, caring mother.

Dovina: 60s, wise, speaks with Italian accented English, sizes up situations, problem solver, old school Italian, talks in proverbs at times.

Ernst: 50-70, German American, business oriented, controlling, fair-minded, quick temper.

Michele: 17; politically astute, listener.

Gioanna: 15, sensitive, humor, loving, wears a partial brace to support weakened leg due to polio.

Valeria: 40-50, sexy, firecracker, humor, quick, fun loving,

Mother Superior: 40-50, reserved, speaks with deliberate pace, loyal to her God.

Deputy Director Brown (40s-50s), FBI, the boss, gives order, insensitive to axis related ethnic persons, true believers in justice and concern about subversives doing damage to America before and during the war.

Sargent Hollister (40s-50s), has an oversimplified view of foreigners, especially PWs at the internment camp; reflects the prejudice of his times.

Agent Coburn (30s-40s,), FBI, carries out orders given by Brown, albeit reluctantly at times.

Jed Smith (30s-40s), sheriff and KKK wizard, highly prejudiced against Italians, Jews, Catholics, etc., willing to carry out violent acts against them in the name of patriotism.

Ugo (30s-40s), PW in internment camp with Gustavo, Italian American.
