This exploration of a family tragedy is originally told and heartbreaking.

…the heartbreaking story of a family that loses a son in a hiking accident. Beautifully written, it begins when the parents first meet, get married, raise three boys and then struggle with their tragic loss and one less number.

One of the best plays was Arianna Rose’s tragicomedy “Family by Numbers.” …reminiscing about their courtship and the birth of their three sons. The sons grow older and then tragedy strikes, leading to a powerfully haunting conclusion. Rose’s script explores the nature of mortality and learning to deal with grief.

“Theatre Three’s Festival has presented over one hundred world premieres since its inception.  I rank Family by Numbers in the top five.  It is a powerful piece and an insightful meditation on family.  It begins with a great deal of humor but gracefully shifts into its darker shades.  It is inherently theatrical and therefore allows for a great range of presentations.  As a director, I found joy in working on this piece as did the cast.  The audiences were riveted and truly moved at every performance.” – Jeffrey Sanzel, Executive Artistic Director, Theater Three, Port Jefferson, NY

FAMILY BY NUMBERS is a cleverly-wrought spoken motet—a rhythmic and melodic fugue for solo and entwined voices that explores a remarkable array of life’s eternal issues in just a few short minutes: love (romantic, parental, familial), sibling rivalry, regret, grief, and memory. A lovely, poetic, and indelible piece.” – Robert Weibezahl, playwright

****

“Family by Numbers” tells an emotional story using presentational dialogue and action. Rose compresses decades into mere minutes, moving at breakneck speed. She also provides enough detail for audiences and actors to understand characters’ emotions. This play is direct, spare, and unflinching. ” – Steven G. Martin, Playwright
