Widowed, driven from her home by her son and his frightful wife, Bridget really had no option but to become the second wife of Professor Bernard Samson, already  the father of four children in wedlock and at least as many by the various local ladies he visited in the evenings. From the outset it was clear he only really wanted a house-keeper. For a year and a half she accepted her position; deeply unhappy, but no-one else noticed or cared.
