by Richard Moore

A three-man team of builders are working on an external wall of a beautiful old house. The property owner, a novelist, is reading aloud her latest pages in self-satisfaction, but her patience is being tested by the constant interruption of the workmen. A proposed alteration soon becomes a feasibility study and the answers trigger an atmosphere of frustration and intolerance. Even with the calming influence of the trusty gardener, the visiting young building inspector finds herself initially at a loss to placate the home owner. She is then refused a right of passage away from the house and ordered to stay. As tempers flare the workforce loyalties come under threat and social etiquette is thrown out of the window.
